Description
'Ulei
is a native Hawaiian evergreen shrub. The 'Ulei
usually spreads widely over the ground, some are
even small trees. The white flowers are 0.5 inch
in diameter, with five petals, five sepals, and
many stamens. The compound leaves in time become
smooth in texture. The oblong leaflet consist of
9 to 19 half inch pairs, with an extra leaflet
at the tip.

Habitat
'Ulei
grows
in dry parts of Hawaii
at altitudes between
sea level and 4,000 feet.

The
wood is tough and
formerly was used by
Hawaiians to make
fish spears and also
the musical
instrument, the 'ukeke. Sometimes the flexible
branches were bent into
hoops for fishnets.
