Pu'u Ka'a, Cyperus Trachysanthos

DescriptionThis umbrella family plant is a leafless, peerennial. Like many other sedges, Pu'u Ka'a's leaflike bracts can be braided into mats and baskets. Both the triangular stems and the flat leaflike flowerbracts are used. The Pu'u Ka'a grows from 1 to 6 feet high. The umbrella-shaped flowering head may grow from 4 to 8 inches.

Habitat Pu'u Ka'a is a leafless, perennial umbrella sedge from Madagascar which may have been introduced to Hawaii about 87 years ago.

 

 

 

 

 

Pu'u Ka'a is similar
to the papyrus plant.
It can be grown outside
and as a pot plant.
