'Ae'ae, Bacopa Mannieria

Description The 'Ae'ae, or' ohelo-kai, is a native ground cover that forms dense mats. It is a srub that grows from a few inches to 3 feet high. The leaves and stems are light green, succulent, and have a very short stem. Small white, lilac or pale blue cup-shaped flowers form in the leaves. The berries are red, shiny, and round. The fruit is salty tasting with many flat seeds.

Habitat This plant needs partial shade to full sun near salt marshes and in the rocks near the ocean. The more sun, the stockier the plant. It will not thrive in full shade. 'Ae'ae does well in most soil types as long as there is regular moisture. It does not do well in dried out soil.

Propogation
The best way to propagate the 'Ae'ae
is using stem cuttings with at
lleast four nodes, or joints in the stem. The stems need
to be placed in moist soil.
Roots will form in less
that five days.

'Ae'ae makes
an ornamental hanging
basket. It works well as a
filler plant in mixed
planters or as a small
houseplant. 'Ae'ae can also
be used as an aquatic plant
in fresh water ponds.
It will grow well above and
below the surface of water.
