Did you know 70 Species of snails have been introduced to the Hawaiian Islands? Some of the introduced snails have become serious pests. Many native species of snails feed only on decaying plants, scrape alge, or fungi from leaves without harming the plants. Some of the some non native snails can kill the plant by feeding directly off of it.

Snails need the kind of habitat that wetlands can provide. Unidentified snail shells have been found in the marsh. It is possible that one of the snails living in the marsh is the Ramshorn snail. Further studies will focus on what species can be found in the marsh, and which ones the birds are eating.

The Hawaiian Coot, Moorhen, and Stilt are the native wetland birds who eat snails. Another possible predator of the snails are the Fire Ant and Long Legged Ant. These birds are important to Hawaii, so we want to take care of them.
