"He
kukulu ae`o." (Said of a thin long legged
man.)

|
The
Hawaiian Stilt
lived at Hamakua because there were many
taro patches in ancient
times around
Keahupua`anui,
the area near Hamakua.

|
The
Hawaiian Stilt likes
taro patches because little delicious to eat
fish
can be found in this
wet garden habitat.
Long ago
the water
at Hamakua was clean.
Therefore it was a good place
for the Hawaiian stilt.

The
Hawaiian stilt eats crab, worms, bugs and
small fish. This bird is like the Mexican stilt,
but the Hawaiian stilt's body is larger and its
beak
is longer. They build their nests on land with
rocks and branches. So it is important that
they
have a hidden place so that nothing can bother
their brood.

I
saw the Hawaiian stilt at Hamakua searching for
food. Watching the Hawaiian stilt was very
interesting to me. Some of them hid, but there
is not a lot of foilage there nowadays. I think
that the Hawaiian stilt was respected by the
elders, because, it is a pretty and somewhat
funny bird which did not bother humans.
