The
'Ulili is a bird which likes to spend its time
alone, in pairs ,or in small flocks. The 'Ulili
is able to soar above the surf in search of
food. To find food they forage in mud flats and
the shoreline for mollusks, crustaceans, worms,
fish, and nerites, which are tiny marine snails
known in Hawaiian as "pipipi". These nerites are
plentiful on rocks above the ocean water
level.
While the 'Ulili searches for food, it bobs its
head over the water surface and under the rocks.
It captures its prey with its long sharp bill.
The 'Ulili is an opportunistic feeder, catching
whatever comes its way.The 'Ulili eats insects
like flies. There are so many species of flies,
that it would be difficult to identify
them.
