The
Hunakai winter in Hawaii and leave for their
Arctic breeding grounds in April. Their breeding
plumage is reddish brown on their head and back.
Hunakai have one mate a year and they are
monogamous. The Hunakai's breeding season is
from late June to August.
Their nest is a simple hole in the ground or
gravel. They line the hole with moss and lichen.
The Hunakai or Sanderling lay from 2-4 eggs.
These eggs incubate for 24-32 days. Both parents
care for the eggs and chicks. The downy chicks
have white undersides and buff to white
upperparts, speckled with black. Chicks are
precocial, which means that they are able to
feed themselves. The Hunakai chicks can fly
within 17 days.
