Hunakai are
often seen in small groups on the sandy beaches, mudflats.,
reef pools, brackish ponds,
freshwater wetlands, grassy fields, reservoirs and in
seaweed beds. They gather with other
migratory shorebirds like the Kolea (Pacific Golden
Plovers), 'Akekeke (Ruddy Turnstone)., and
the 'Ulili (Wandering Tattler). In Hawaii, they are not
territorial.

Hunakai
are long distance migratory birds. They come
from Alaska, Canada, Greenland, and Siberia. They
winter in Africa, Australia,
South America, the
Central Pacific Islands and coastal regions of all
the continents.
