Hunakai
feed by pecking on the mudflats or in shallow
water. They hunt for invertebrates washed to
shore by waves. They run back and forth on
short, dark legs pecking at small crabs or
snails on the beach. Hunakai create thousands of
holes in the sand, looking for food. The smell
and taste sensors in their beaks are used to
find crabs and insects in the sand.
