The
Cattle Egret is found near cattle pens,
pastures, garbage dumps, ponds, and taro lo'i,
or patches. They travel in large flocks of up to
20 birds to their feeding areas. They also nest
together in large groups, in mangrove and kiawe
or algaroba trees. The Cattle Egret threaten
native waterbirds by preying on their young and
competing for food and wetland habitats. Its
habit of foraging for food near airports has
increased the threat of airplane crashes. Since
they feed at landfills and dumps, they can be a
health problem.
