Cattle
Egrets feed on insects in pasture lands and in
wetlands. They get their name from following cattle
and eating the insects on and around them. They
also feed by following after tractors and mowers,
which make food easy to find. Cattle Egrets eat
large numbers of grasshoppers, cockroaches,
caterpillars, flies, moths, and centipedes. They
also feed on crabs, mice, frogs, skinks, and
lizards. Egrets forage in flocks. The birds in the
rear leapfrog over the birds in the front. The
leapfrogging ensures that all the birds get food.
The birds have been observed shaking their neck as
centipedes are swallowed, biting down all the way.
After feeding, Cattle Egrets can be seen returning
to roost for the evening.
