Habitat

The 'Auku'u lives in wetlands, like marshes, mud flats, streams, lagoons, rivers, tidepools, lakes, ponds, swamps, and tropical mangroves. They have even been found in rice fields and other farm lands near water. The 'Auku'u usually keep close to water and plants where they can roost and take cover. They live throughout North America, South America, Eurasia, the Falkland Islands, Africa, and Hawai'i.

The Heron may be seen alone or in small groups near fresh, salt, and brackish water. Their hunting grounds may be several miles from their nesting area.
