Hawaiian Moorhen

Habitat

The Alae 'Ula are found in freshwater ponds, marshes, reservoirs, and other sites with freshwater. They stay close to thick vegetation, water plants and grasses.

Alae 'Ula live in the wetlands of O'ahu and Kaua'i. They are endemic, which means they are unigue to Hawai`i. They were once commonly found on many of the Hawaiian Islands,

The Hawaiian Moorhen runs along on secret trails in the thick weeds in marshes. They choose to hide if startled, rather than fly away.

The 'Alae 'Ula like to frequent wetland habitats, however, their homes are rapidly disappearing. Commercial and housing developments have caused the 'Alae 'Ula to become an endangered bird, which means they could become extinct.
