'Akekeke
spend their winter throughout Hawaii,
Micronesia, Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, and South
America. In late May, small flocks of 'Akekeke
leave their winter ground in the Arctic. The
Ruddy Turnstone nest on the Arctic tundra along
the coasts. While a very small number stay in
Hawaii for the summer, they do not nest
here.

'Akekeke
have a wide range of preferences for their
habitat. They are most often seen on coastal
areas, flying over beaches, on the rocky
shoreline, and congregating with other
shorebirds. While the 'Akekeke may be seen in
their Hawaiian habitat, their numbers have
lessened in recent years. Loss of wetland
habitats and predators have contributed to their
decreasing numbers. In Hawaii, 'Akekeke are seen
in small numbers on all of the major Hawaiian
Islands.
