`Alae Ke'oke'o
Hawaiian Coot

Diet

'Alae Ke'oke'o spend their time in open water, swimming in groups, while feeding on the surface of fresh and brackish water. They dive into the water to find and eat food. Food items include seeds, leaves of water plants, insects, snails, tadpoles, and small fish.

The rounded flaps of skin on their toes help the 'Alae Ke'o ke'o dive, swim, and fly to get their food. The 'Alae Ke'oke'o usually feed close to their nesting aeas, but will travel far when food is unavailble.

'Alae Ke'oke'o also graze on grassy areas near their wetland habitats. They get their food by diving, swimming to the surface of the water, grazing on grass, or foraging in the mud and sand.
