'Alae
Ke'oke'o, the Hawaiian Coot, is endemic, or
native to the Hawaiian Islands. It is a Hawaiian
species which may have developed from coots
which migrated to Hawaii from North America.
'Alae Ke'oke'o are 14 inches tall. The adult is
grayish black with a white bill and a
bulb-shaped front shield.

A
few 'Alae Ke'oke'o have a red frontal shield and
dark maroon markings, with yellow at the tip of
their bill. A third type of 'Alae Ke'oke'o has a
full red frontal lobe. Their legs and feet are
greenish yellow in color.
